BAKFlip MX4 Tonneau Cover

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

We built the BAKFlip MX4 for truck owners who demand durability without the gloss. This four-panel folding tonneau cover features heavy-duty aluminum slats with a matte finish that resists scratches and UV damage season after season. The MX4 sits flush with your truck bed rails and locks securely at the tailgate, giving you weather-sealed protection and easy access to your cargo.

Every panel folds independently, so you can haul tall loads near the cab while keeping the rest of your bed covered. The automatic latching system means you never fumble with clamps or straps — just fold, and the panels lock in place. We designed the MX4 to install in under an hour with basic hand tools and no drilling required on most truck models.

Aluminum Panel Construction & Finish

We manufacture every BAKFlip MX4 tonneau cover with extruded aluminum slats reinforced by a fiberglass-polymer composite core. This sandwich construction delivers the strength of a hard cover without the weight penalty of solid metal or the brittleness of unsupported plastic. The matte powder-coat finish bonds directly to the aluminum, creating a surface that hides dust and resists the glossy swirl marks that show up on shiny covers after a few car washes.

Each panel measures approximately one-quarter of your bed length and connects via our proprietary hinge system. The hinges are sealed against moisture and use stainless-steel pivot pins that won’t seize in freezing temperatures. We coat the underside of every panel with a dense foam gasket that compresses against your bed rails to block wind-driven rain and road spray.

Multi-Position Folding & Load Access
Sizing & fit

Multi-Position Folding & Load Access

The MX4’s four-panel design gives you more cargo flexibility than traditional tri-fold covers. You can fold the first panel against the cab to haul dirt bikes or tall toolboxes, latch the remaining three panels for partial bed coverage, or fold all four panels completely open for unrestricted access when loading lumber or appliances. Every folded position locks automatically — no straps to tie or prop rods to juggle.

Fold Configurations

Panel one folds independently for 18–24 inches of clearance near the cab (exact dimension varies by truck bed length). Panels two and three latch together for a half-bed configuration, ideal for weekend trips when you need rear cargo space but want your gear up front secured. When you fold all four panels against the cab, the stack sits low enough that your rear window sight lines stay clear. The MX4 cannot be removed quickly for full open-bed use — it’s designed as a semi-permanent cover that folds rather than detaches.

Styling

Weather Sealing & Drainage System

We seal the MX4 at three critical points: the panel-to-rail interface, the hinge-to-hinge joints, and the dual-action tailgate clamp. Dense EPDM rubber gaskets run the length of each side rail and compress when you close the panels, creating a continuous barrier against water entry. The hinge seals use overlapping fins that shed rain away from the joint rather than allowing it to pool.

At the tailgate, our dual-action seal clamps down on the bed rail and wraps over the tailgate edge simultaneously. This two-surface contact stops the backdraft that pushes water under single-point latches during highway driving. We include adjustable drain tubes that mount inside your bed corners — any moisture that does penetrate the seals channels through these tubes and exits near your wheel wells instead of pooling on your bed floor. Our tonneau cover lineup uses this same drainage philosophy across all folding models for consistent performance in wet climates.

Best matte finish cover I've used
I installed the MX4 on my 2021 F-150 and the matte black finish looks perfect without constant polishing. Dust wipes off easily and it still looks new after six months of daily use. The install took me about 40 minutes with no issues.

Solid weather protection in Pacific Northwest rain
We get heavy rain from October through April and the MX4 keeps my bed completely dry. I checked after a week of storms and found zero water inside. The drain tubes work as advertised and the tailgate seal is tight.

Folding panels give me the cargo access I need
I haul landscaping equipment and the four-panel fold is a game changer. I can open just the front panel for my backpack blower or fold everything back when I load the mower. Beats removing a one-piece cover every time.

Great cover but needs crossbars for roof loads
The MX4 is tough and well-built, but you'll need to buy crossbars separately if you want to carry kayaks or a cargo box on top. I added BAKFlip's crossbar kit and now I can load gear up there without worry. Would be five stars if crossbars were included.

No drilling required on my Silverado
I was nervous about drilling into my new truck bed but the clamp system worked perfectly on my 2020 Silverado. Everything lined up and the cover sits flush with the rails. The instructions were clear and I didn't need any custom modifications.

Holds snow load better than my old soft cover
We had a big snowstorm last month and the MX4 handled the weight without bending. My previous vinyl cover would sag under heavy snow but this aluminum holds firm. I cleared the snow after two days and the cover went right back to flat.

Good to know

BAKFlip MX4 Buyer Questions

No, the MX4 installs without drilling on most full-size and mid-size trucks using our clamp-on rail system. The clamps secure inside your bed's stake pockets or along the inner bed rail channel.

If your truck has a thick spray-in bedliner, you may need to trim the liner slightly around the stake pocket areas for a flush fit, but no permanent holes are drilled into the bed itself.

Yes, the four-panel folding design allows you to open just the first panel for 18–24 inches of clearance while keeping the rest of your bed covered and locked. You can also fold the first two panels for half-bed access or fold all four panels completely open against the cab.

Every fold position locks automatically, so you don't need straps or prop rods to hold the panels in place.

We rate the MX4 at 400 pounds of evenly distributed weight when all panels are closed and latched. This capacity supports cargo boxes, kayaks on crossbars, or seasonal gear on top of the cover.

Avoid placing concentrated loads directly over a hinge point, and use aftermarket crossbars designed for tonneau cover mounting if you plan to carry roof cargo regularly.

The MX4 provides excellent weather resistance with EPDM rubber seals along the bed rails and a dual-action tailgate clamp. We include adjustable drain tubes that channel any minor moisture out through your bed corners.

In heavy rain or highway driving, a small amount of mist may enter through hinge joints during extreme conditions, but the bed floor will remain dry under normal use.

The BAKFlip MX4 features a matte powder-coat finish that resists scratches and hides dust, while the G2 has a high-gloss paint finish. Both covers use the same four-panel aluminum construction, automatic latching system, and installation method.

Choose the MX4 if you prefer a low-maintenance matte look, or the G2 if you want a glossy finish that matches polished truck accessories.

Most truck owners complete the installation in 45 minutes to one hour using basic hand tools like a socket wrench and tape measure. The cover ships with the four panels pre-assembled and hinged together, so you're only mounting the side rails and dropping the panel assembly into place.

We provide truck-specific instructions for popular models, and our customer support team can answer fitment questions if you encounter any issues during installation.

The MX4 is compatible with most bed extenders as long as the extender does not interfere with the tailgate seal area. For fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitches, you'll need to ensure the hitch base does not sit higher than the bed rail — most flush-mount hitches work fine.

If your hitch has a raised plate that extends above the rail, the cover panels may not close fully. Contact our support team with your specific hitch model for a fitment check before ordering.
