BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
The BAKFlip MX4 delivers the strength of aluminum with the sleek appearance of a matte black finish. Our engineers designed this hard folding tonneau cover to withstand 400 pounds of evenly distributed snow load while maintaining full bed access in seconds.
We built the MX4 on our proven four-panel fold design, allowing you to open from the cab or tailgate and drive with panels folded upright against the cab window. The low-profile stance sits flush with most bed rails, and our exclusive sealed panel edges keep moisture and dust out of your cargo area.
Core specifications

Aluminum Panel Construction
We manufacture every BAKFlip MX4 panel from aluminum extrusions reinforced with a composite FRP (fiberglass-reinforced polymer) undercoating. This dual-layer structure delivers dent resistance without the weight penalty of steel.
The matte black powder-coat finish bonds directly to the aluminum surface, creating a non-reflective appearance that complements factory bed rails and toolboxes. Unlike gloss finishes that highlight minor scratches, our matte coating hides everyday wear and resists UV degradation in direct sunlight.

Four-Panel Folding System
The MX4 divides into four equal panels connected by our patented dual-action hinges. You can open the first panel from the cab end for quick access to front-bed storage, or release all four panels from the tailgate for full bed clearance.
When fully open, panels stack upright against the cab window and latch automatically using spring-loaded buckles. This configuration gives you 100% bed access for tall cargo like dirt bikes or appliances while maintaining cover security on the remaining panels.
Clamp-On Installation
We designed the MX4 mounting system to install in under an hour without drilling holes in your bed rails. Our adjustable clamps grip the inside of most factory bed rails, and thumbscrew tensioners let you fine-tune panel alignment after the cover is in place.
Each kit includes pre-assembled drain tubes that route moisture away from the mounting hardware. You’ll attach these tubes to the underside of the side rails, where they channel water toward the bed floor and out through factory bed drain holes.

Common Questions About the MX4
Yes, the MX4 is fully compatible with factory and aftermarket spray-in bed liners. Our adjustable clamps grip the inside of the bed rail regardless of liner thickness, and the perimeter seal compresses against the liner surface to maintain weather-tight closure.
If your liner extends over the top of the bed rails, you may need to trim the liner edge slightly to allow the clamps to sit flat. We provide detailed liner clearance specifications in the installation manual.
The BAKFlip MX4 supports up to 400 pounds of evenly distributed weight when all four panels are closed and latched. This capacity accommodates typical snow accumulation and allows you to place light cargo on top of the cover.
We do not recommend walking on the cover or concentrating weight on a single panel. Always distribute loads across all four panels, and ensure the tailgate latch is engaged to support the rear panel.
Yes, the MX4 opens from either end. You can release the front panel from the cab side for quick access to front-bed storage, or you can release all four panels from the tailgate end for full bed access.
Each panel latches independently, so you can open one, two, three, or all four panels depending on what you need to access. The hinges allow panels to fold forward or backward for maximum flexibility.
We recommend rinsing the cover and drain channels every few months to remove dirt and debris. Use car wash soap and a soft brush to clean the matte finish—avoid abrasive cleaners that can dull the coating.
Lubricate the hinge pivot points annually with silicone spray to maintain smooth operation, and inspect the rubber seals for damage. We offer replacement seals and hardware through our parts department if any components wear over time.
The MX4 is compatible with most under-bed fifth-wheel hitch systems that do not require rails mounted on top of the bed floor. If your hitch puck system sits below the bed rail level, the cover will install normally.
Gooseneck hitches that mount flush with the bed floor also work with the MX4. If you have an above-bed rail system or bed-mounted toolbox that extends behind the cab, measure your available clearance before ordering.
The MX4 provides rigid panel security that soft covers cannot match. Our aluminum construction resists cutting and forced entry, and the locking tailgate latch prevents unauthorized access to your bed.
Soft covers typically roll up behind the cab, which limits bed access when partially opened. The MX4's four-panel design gives you multiple access configurations, and you can drive with panels folded without removing the cover from the truck.
Yes, you can remove the entire MX4 in about five minutes by loosening the clamp tensioners and lifting the cover off the bed rails. We designed the cover to be light enough for one person to handle—each complete unit weighs approximately 70 pounds depending on bed length.
Most users find the fold-up configuration provides enough clearance for tall cargo without needing to remove the cover. If you frequently haul items taller than the cab, consider our Revolver X4s rolling cover for faster full-bed access.
